How to Jump-Start a Car Safely (Without Damaging It)
18 April 20265 min read
Jump leads can revive a flat battery — but done wrong they can harm modern electronics. Follow this safe, correct sequence.
Jump-starting is a useful skill, but modern cars are sensitive. Follow the correct order to stay safe and avoid costly damage.
What you need
A set of good-quality jump leads and a second vehicle with a healthy, matching-voltage battery.
The safe sequence
- Turn off both cars.
- Connect the red lead to the positive (+) terminal of the flat battery, then to the positive of the good battery.
- Connect the black lead to the negative (–) of the good battery, then to an unpainted metal point on the flat car — not its battery.
- Start the working car, wait a minute, then start the flat car.
- Remove the leads in reverse order.
When not to DIY
