AGM vs Standard Car Batteries: Which Does Your Car Need?

28 May 20266 min read

Start-stop systems and modern electronics demand more from a battery. Here's the difference between AGM, EFB and standard batteries — and how to choose.

Not all car batteries are the same. Fitting the wrong type can cause electrical faults and premature failure. Here's what you need to know.

Standard (flooded) batteries

The traditional lead-acid battery found in older and simpler vehicles. Affordable and reliable for cars without start-stop technology.

EFB batteries

Enhanced Flooded Batteries handle more charge cycles than standard units, making them suitable for entry-level start-stop vehicles.

AGM batteries

Absorbent Glass Mat batteries are sealed, spill-proof and built for heavy electrical demand. Most modern European cars with start-stop, regenerative braking or extensive electronics require AGM.

Why fitment matters

Many cars need the new battery registered to the vehicle's system. Fit the wrong type — or skip registration — and you risk warning lights, poor fuel economy and a shortened battery life.
